Lyric Analysis - Miss Georgiou

"Feels like we only go backwards"

What are the hidden meanings in the song?

There are many difference hidden meanings within the song that can be seen by the audience. They mainly focus around the scenario of a break up between the singer and another entity. In which we see the person in a constant battle physically and mentally with his partner and whether they should get back together. This can be seen by such lyrics as "Every part of me says go ahead, I've got my hopes up again ,oh no, not again". He then sees his thoughts as stupid as he see that's she has given up on him "Maybe your feeling don't show", hence the common motif "Feels like we only go backwards".

"I know that you think you've set sail when you call my name". This may refer to previous arguments that the couple have encountered. And when she calls/shouts his name, he sees this as a call sign and that there is no life left in the relationship and that it is coming to an end referring to the sailing part of the quote empathising going away/moving on.

"The seed of this indecision isn't me, oh no". this quote indirectly is stating in another way that the root of the break up is not the artist himself but the other half of the relationship who is causing the doubt between them. Seed meaning the start looking from the perspective of plants. This quote is rather conversational like and seems like the artist is blame shifting and saying it is solely down to her.

"When I realize I'm just hopin onto the hope that, maybe your feelings don't show". Once again this quote is showing that the artist is having
second thoughts and that he doesn't want to be with her but only if she is has genuine feelings for him which needs to be shown and clearly apparent to him. He doesn't want to break up with her but he feels it needs to take place.

How have your group annotated the lyrics?

We have annotated the lyrics according to what we feel stood out from the lyrics, this then accounted to create ideas for our group. The lyrics that we highlighted became the lyrics that we most focused on. We wrote a brief outline of what we felt the lyrics meant and ideas could be brief used or focused on when we come to creating a planned out narrative and storyboards. We also considered what possible camera angles that we could use as seen below we have considered at the end rewinding all of the footage that we have put together as it reflects the lyrics 'going backwards'. We also started to brainstorm ideas of locations that we could use this can be seen on the top right of the picture where we have briefly listed some locations we feel are suitable in relation to the lyrics of the song.
Finally we have outlined the main themes of the song which are going forward and moving on and also going backwards hence the lyrics constantly plugged to the audience throughout the song.

How will your annotation assist you with planning the micro elements, style, target audience and convention of your chosen song?

These annotations will place a vital role in the pre-production stages of our as already we have identified key micro elements that we would like to include such as particular camera angles and when we would like the audience to feel the effects of not only lyrics but visuals as well. Also from these annotations we can start to narrow down what conventions and other elements such as camera angles and editing techniques we want to use that will appeal to our target audience that we want to please the most, but almost other element that may make our work branch out to wider audiences due to us making our video more mainstream and less conventional to the genre itself (not all elements) for the benefit of the artist and record labels in revenue generated.

We as a group feel that the narrative should as a result of the lyrics focus around the idea of a relationship between two characters one being female and the other a male which will take the lead role. We want to have strong themes that will keep the audience engaged and keep the narrative compelling such as drug usage for the themes of the genre and somehow link with the theme of suicide due to depression due to the downward spiral of the relationship and drugs which will be clearly displayed and how they effect his behaviour and discussion making. In linking with this we also plan to used editing techniques such as colour tints to reinforce the idea of drug usage.

The relationship we feel should follow the idea of a break up due to an affair or the male character sleeping around which is more common for the age of the characters that we plan to use, also this will be for engaging for our target audience as this is something they should be able to relate to due it being a common theme among young adults. I feel also that our video will be highly repayable due to the location that we plan to use, as we plan to film in London in recognisable locations such as Liverpool street station, Canary Wharf and using the tube that links them all together alike.

  1. You have made a start in considering the hidden meanings of your chosen song and it is clear to see that you have considered a narrative for your production. However, the narrative needs to be explored in a lot more detail, by explaining what will be seen, the style of the production, explanation of how you will follow the conventions of your chosen song and how your production will appeal to your target audience.

  2. You have made a start in considering the style and narrative of your chosen song further, but you also need to ensure that you have considered the whole of your production. This can be achieved, by considering specific micro elements that you would like to include within your production. This will enable you to demonstrate further planning techniques.
